Comparison · Higher education
Nine options, what each is genuinely built for, and how to tell which one fits your institution. Written by a Salesforce partner who implements several of them.
The short answer
Salesforce Education Cloud is the industry-cloud licence for higher education, successor to the Education Data Architecture (EDA). The usual alternatives are Technolutions Slate, Ellucian CRM, Anthology, EAB Navigate360, Element451, HubSpot and Liaison TargetX. There is a fourth path: keep Salesforce and skip the vertical licence. Eddy by apphero covers prospect to alumni on core Sales and Service Cloud licences.

The landscape
Most comparison pages exist to sell you one product. This one names the cases where another vendor is the better answer — including Salesforce's own vertical licence.
| Solution | Built for | Best fit | Licence model |
|---|---|---|---|
| Technolutions Slate | Admissions and recruitment — applications, events, communications, reader review | Enrollment teams whose priority is the admissions funnel | Institution-wide subscription |
| Ellucian CRM Recruit / Advance | Recruitment and advancement tightly coupled to Banner and Colleague | Institutions standardized on the Ellucian SIS | Vendor SaaS, per module |
| Anthology | Full lifecycle — recruitment, engagement, student success, advancement | Institutions already in the Anthology and Blackboard ecosystem | Vendor SaaS, per module |
| EAB Navigate360 | Student success, advising and retention, plus enrollment and advancement modules | Institutions whose first problem is retention, not recruitment | Institution-wide subscription |
| Element451 | AI-first engagement, enrollment marketing and conversational outreach | Teams that want AI-driven student engagement quickly | Institution-wide subscription |
| HubSpot | Marketing automation adapted to enrollment funnels | Smaller institutions and individual programmes with a marketing-led funnel | Per seat plus contact tiers |
| Liaison TargetX | Admissions CRM built on the Salesforce platform | Admissions teams that want Salesforce without building it themselves | Vendor subscription on Salesforce OEM licences |
| Salesforce Education Cloud | Higher-education data model — admissions, student success, advancement, Agentforce | Large institutions standardizing on Salesforce and taking the vertical model as delivered | Industry-cloud licence, per user |
| Eddy by apphero | Prospect to alumni on Salesforce — recruitment, enrollment, advising, advancement, SIS and LMS integrations, bilingual | Institutions already on, or moving to, Salesforce that do not want a vertical licence | Runs on core Sales and Service Cloud licences |
Where we fit
Eddy is a native Salesforce platform built on core licences rather than on Education Cloud. Recruitment, enrollment, advising, academic operations and advancement live in one org, with Agentforce on top and the SIS and LMS integrated rather than replaced. Same platform, same security model, without a second per-user licence for every advisor and every fundraiser.
Book a 30-minute assessmentWhen Education Cloud is the right answer
If your institution is standardizing several campuses on Salesforce and wants a vendor-maintained higher-education data model that other ISVs also build against, the vertical licence is a defensible purchase. We say so during the assessment rather than after the contract.
How to choose
Is your problem the funnel, or the whole journey?
If it stops at admitted students, Slate is hard to beat. If it runs through advising, retention and alumni giving, you need a platform rather than a funnel tool.
What is your SIS, and what does it dictate?
Banner or Colleague pulls hard toward Ellucian CRM. A neutral or modern SIS leaves the CRM decision genuinely open.
Do you already own Salesforce licences?
If yes, building on core with a native package avoids a second per-user licence and a migration you did not ask for.
Do you operate in two languages?
Cégeps, Québec universities, French and Belgian institutions need bilingual delivery in the product, not a translation project bolted on afterwards.
FAQ
Education Cloud is Salesforce's industry cloud for education: a prebuilt higher-education data model with applications for admissions, student success, academic operations and advancement, plus Agentforce. It is licensed per user, on top of the core platform.
EDA was the open-source data model that many institutions built on. Salesforce has moved higher education onto the Education Cloud industry data model, and new implementations start there. Institutions running EDA face a decision: migrate to the licensed model, or consolidate onto core objects with a partner-maintained package.
The higher-education specialists are Technolutions Slate, Ellucian CRM Recruit and Advance, Anthology, EAB Navigate360 and Element451. HubSpot covers marketing-led enrollment for smaller institutions. Liaison TargetX is an admissions CRM built on Salesforce itself. Staying on core Salesforce with a native package such as Eddy by apphero is a fourth path that keeps the platform and drops the vertical licence.
Slate is the stronger admissions product and is faster to stand up. Its value drops once the student enrolls, which is why institutions running Slate typically add separate tools for advising, retention and advancement. Salesforce is the stronger answer when you want one record of the student from first enquiry to alumni giving.
Yes. Recruitment, enrollment, advising, academic operations and advancement can be modelled on core Sales and Service Cloud objects, either by configuration or through a managed package such as Eddy. What you give up is Salesforce's vendor-maintained higher-education model; what you keep is the platform, the integrations and your users.
Bilingual delivery is a product requirement, not a translation task: field labels, portal screens, communications and AI agents all have to work in both languages. apphero delivers in English and French from Las Vegas, Toronto, Québec, Paris and Bruxelles, which is why Eddy is bilingual from day one rather than localized later.
